Once a small and somewhat sheltered fishing village, Sines, known as Sinus in Roman times, is now becoming a popular place for visitors. This is partially due to the creation of its deep-sea port that allows the presence of oil tankers to greatly contribute to its economy and therefore improvements to the town, though this does give it a somewhat industrial feel. But additionally, its rising cultural and musical significance in the form of the Festival Músicas do Mundo, a world music festival held there yearly that attracts music lovers from all over the world, adds to its appeal.
It is also an attractive town perched atop a cliff that ensures the views of the ocean are abundant and resplendent. The view is particularly lovely from the site of the ruins of Sines’ medieval castle. It is said that Vasco da Gama, one of the most famous explorers in the Age of Discovery, was born here and there is a statue of him in the town. There is also a small collection based on the life of the explorer and his conquests and discoveries in one of the castle towers.
