Odemira

in

Nestled in the south of Alentejo, one of Europe’s most picturesque areas, is the wonderful hilltop town Odemira that boasts some enchanting gardens and wonderful views of the river Mira. It is an idyllic spot for those seeking a relaxing day trip. Though its history is as colourful and tumultuous as many of the regions cities, Odemira no longer posses many historical buildings and churches like many of counterparts in Alentejo. This is simply because they have been destroyed or fallen into disrepair over the years.

Despite this, what it lacks in historical evidence it makes up for in charm. It is a town in which windmills have been traditionally used to process the regions corn and wheat and there are some perched on the town’s highest point that are beautifully preserved and still in operation. Odemira is also popular for its pottery workshop, and the craftspeople of this town can also be found making hand woven fabric, baskets and furniture.

The river Mira can also be a great source of entertainment for visitors as canoeing or rowing is commonly participated in on its waters. There is also the Santa Clara dam nearby which is a popular destination for locals who want to catch some sun or get involved in water sports. Furthermore, a short distance west of Odemira are lay some of Portugal’s best beaches.
