Monsaraz

Monsaraz

Situated in the heart of the Alentejo region, Monsaraz is a traditional Portuguese town that offers spectacular views of the surrounding landscape from its elevated position. Evidence suggests that the land the town sits on had been occupied even before the Roman era, and its history is coloured with tales of occupation from the Moors and the Visigoths.

Today the town is quaint and picture perfect, boasting winding cobbled streets, whitewashed houses and historical forts. Ideal for a day trip day trip, spend time wandering around or following the town walls and become enchanted by its charm and magical medieval atmosphere.

The castle and its keep are well worth a look, as is 16th century Nossa Senhora da Lagoa Church and the São Bento Chapel. It is also a place known for its local food and occasional art exhibitions.
