Located in the Alentejo region, Estremoz was inhabited since before its Roman occupation. There are Roman, Visigoth and Muslim influences that are still visible today, as at times each group has occupied this much sought after region of Portugal. Finally captured, like so many surrounding towns, by the Christian Portuguese in the 12th century, its history differs at this point as it was then recaptured by the Moors less than 100 years later.

But in the 13th century king Sancho II managed to recapture it from the Moors and since then it has been of great significance in many territorial battles fought by Portuguese armies defending the region against invasion and has also been an important political centre throughout the centuries. The solid fortifications of the town were able to deter invaders and eventually aid the army in defeating Spanish troops in the War of Independence in the 15th century.
Its domineering and somewhat majestic castle stands proudly in the centre of town and houses the Torre das Três Coroas, a 27 meter tall tower built in the 13th century. There are also a few churches that provide a good reason for stopping in this historically rich town, as do the ruins of the town’s fortifications. Another reason is the traditional red clay figures that are produced here and sold in its local shops and markets. Not only is clay a natural resource utilised by the locals of this area, but Estremoz is internationally known for its marble quarries. Not only is it a large importer of marble, but its residents and builders use it in a variety of ways within the town, even on the exteriors of houses and shops, a fact alone that makes the town worth a visit.
